Here at Get Sad Y'all, we thought it would be a great idea to interview numerous people in various aspects of the music industry to serve as guides for those that might want to pursue a career. Those interviews can be found here.

If there's anyone you'd like us to interview, give us a shout.

Below, we chatted with Haley Mewborn (HNM Creative) about running a podcast.

Who are you and what do you do?
HM: My name is Haley Mewborn and I’m a photographer/videographer working primarily in the music industry capturing live events.
How long have you been a photographer?
HM: I’ve been a photographer for almost 3 years now.
Who are some of the bigger artists you've shot for?
HM: Some of the bigger artists I’ve shot for are Sleeping With Sirens, Chase Atlantic, Four Year Strong, Crown The Empire, and Whitechapel.
What's your day-to-day look like?
HM: My day-to-day is different depending on the day as I do have a full time job outside of my photography. Its pretty often that I'll work and have shoots around my work schedule or shoot shows at night and work in the morning.
How did you get on the path to becoming a photographer? What made you want to become one?
HM: I’ve always been really interested in photography, I got my first camera when I was 13 and shot whatever I could. I took a break from it during most of high school but then after taking one film photography class in college, I was hooked on it again. While I was taking different photography classes in college, I also started going to a lot of concerts and saw other music photographers at different venues. I tried it out for a couple shows and fell in love with it.
What is something you've learned about photography over time that you wish you had known from the start?
HM: Something I’ve learned over time that I wish I had focused on in the beginning is that a shot doesn’t have to be “perfect” to be a beautiful shot.
Where should someone looking to become a photographer start their career path?
HM: If someone was wanting to get into music photography, I’d say start local, shoot any local show or venue you can until you get enough practice and build a good enough portfolio.
What are three key things that someone looking to become a photographer should know?
HM:
  • Shoot in Raw.
  • Your gear doesn’t define you or make you any better.
  • Shoot what you’re passionate about not what other people want you to do or what’s going to make you the most money. The passion you put out will translate into your art.
